Who We are
In the grace and power of Jesus Christ, thousands of people in Sonoma County have poured themselves out for the hungry and afflicted through the ministry of the Redwood Gospel Missions. And because of their efforts, a light has shown in the darkness. It is a light which is much more than the landmark neon “Jesus Saves” sign that lights up the corner of 6th and Wilson for the last 5 decades.
It is a light brought about by the transformed lives which have resulted from the ministries of all those who have poured themselves out. Beginning as a 14 bed shelter in 1963, the Missions now mobilize the community to minister to the needy through a variety of homeless services, recovery programs, vocational training, jail ministries, outreach events and thrift store.
Redwood Gospel Missions, in the grace and power of Jesus Christ, mobilizes our community to minister to people in need, so that lives are transformed.
Redwood represents the geographical area of our service community, the “Redwood Empire.” We serve all of Sonoma County, also reaching out to the surrounding counties which have no Rescue Ministries.
Gospel is from the Latin word for good news. It is our desire to bring the good news of Christ’s salvation to everyone we serve and to bring the good news of hope for an improved life through the various services we provide.
Mission is not intended to imply simply a building. We define “Mission” as a purpose or aim. It is our objective or mission, that lives would be transformed through mobilizing and equipping people in this community to minister to the needy.
Gospel is from the Latin word for good news. It is our desire to bring the good news of Christ’s salvation to everyone we serve and to bring the good news of hope for an improved life through the various services we provide.
We envision a Redwood Empire where homelessness, hunger, and addictions of all kinds are vanishing because of the courageous, coordinated, and Spirit empowered ministry of the Body of Christ.
Our Biblically based values serve as a compass to fulfill our Mission. These include:
Faithfulness (Luke 12:42)
Selflessness (Philippians 2:3)
Christ-centered (Hebrews 12:2)
Servant-hearted (2 Corinthians 6:4)
Stewardship (1 Peter 4:10)
Partnership (Philippians 1:4)
Redwood Gospel Missions was founded in 1963 when a group of Rescue Mission leaders, moved by what they witnessed in an area of Santa Rosa, California called ‘Wino Town’, responded to the urgent needs of men struggling with homelessness and addiction. What began as a step of faith – one leader and his wife relocating to help start a new work – quickly became a community effort in partnership with local churches. From the very beginning, the mission existed for one clear purpose: to bring the life-transforming hope of Jesus Christ to people facing life-controlling challenges and to see lives restored, rebuilt, and renewed.
